Store app creates multiple duplicate entries

This problem is a bit hard to describe, but a client of mine is facing a weird and potentially illegal issue with the Gridbox Store App.
We don't quite understand why this happens, but the app sometimes creates multiple entries for the same order (these rows have no date specified, have the same card_id as the other duplicate entries, and don't show up in the frontend of our admin console). This usually wouldn't be a problem as you wouldn't see these duplicates, but they, of course, take up an ID in the database shifting the consecutive ID to however many duplicates there are. And as the ID gets used for the order_number and - at least in Germany - this number legally cannot have gaps, we need to find a way to stop this from happening.

This is actually a good question. We don't know what the customers of our client do to generate multiple entries of their one shopping cart. We have the suspicion they try to use PayPal which we heard doesn't work for some customers. It apprently doesn't redirect to PayPal. This whould explain the duplicate rows as they would click the PayPal button (which I assume first saves the data to the database but leaves the date column empty) then should redirects to the PayPal payment flow but doesn't.
Give me a moment to setup site access and talk to our client first.

we cannot figure out the cause and fix it

I have hopefully gathered enough behavioral information to reproduce the duplication error and I have found a related problem.

1.) The duplication problem
What I have found is: when you click the 'Place Order' button the checkout data gets saved to the database as a kind of in-between step (bottom row of my first screenshot). If you pay using PayPal a dialog opens. Now the important part: if you, for some reason, cancel the payment now (by closing the dialog) the row stays in the database. This causes problems if you re-open the dialog because then a new row gets created. This should not happen. I see two fixes to this problem: either delete the row if the dialog is closed or canceled at a later step (like if you close the PayPal popup window) or recognize duplicate rows.




2.) The "Thank You" page is broken
I have noticed that the "Thank You" system-page is broken. :(
